Resilience in older persons | Veerkragtigheid by ouer persone

So many older persons experience challenges such as ill health, sadness or financial pressures on a daily basis, but still manage to live with these challenges or overcome them. The WHO has therefore decided to focus in 2022 on the resilience of older persons and their ability to adapt to their circumstances.

This is one of the most amazing qualities of older persons. So many of us can tell stories of a grandmother or grandfather who, despite hardships, still had this wonderful attitude towards life. Their ability to adapt to their circumstances!

Older persons teach us that to be resilient, the so-called ability to adapt, is precisely the trait that allows them to maintain balance between their vulnerability and their ability to move on.  It’s more about being brave and resourceful in terms of their limitations than trying to avoid them. Older persons who live resiliently accommodate their challenges and adapt to them, and we experience them applying more and more pressure to change their living conditions.

However, we as communities have a responsibility to manage their living environment in such a way that older persons can live with resilience.  The physical and social environment we create as a community can either contribute to or can destroy older persons’ resilience.  Healthy personal relationships with older persons, good support of family, adequate and safe housing and safe environments are all factors that can contribute to the resilience of older persons. As a community, we must ensure that there are sufficient resources to meet the needs of the older persons who live with us.

Free State care in Action encourages people to make an effort to maintain a healthy bond with the older persons in families.  Get involved in community actions that focus on providing services to older persons. Within Free State Care in Action services are rendered to older persons in such a way that the elderly person can be involved in decision-making and their needs are listened to.

Please contact Free State Care in Action if you would like to become involved in service delivery to older persons.
