Die bevolking van Suid Afrika, asook die mense van die Vrystaat verarm op `n daaglikse basis as gevolg van die stygende lewenskostes en die hoë werkloosheidssyfer in ons land en provinsie.

Armoede loop hand-aan-hand met hongernood, mense wat nie meer oor genoegsame bronne beskik om kos te koop nie. Diѐ bose kringloop moet gestuit word.

VVA se provinsiale projek – VVA LEEF VOLHOUBAAR IN 2023,  bied hoop vir diegene wie hulle in die krisis bevind. VVA gaan mense regoor die Vrystaat motiveer en bemagtig  om hulle eie organiese groente te kweek en te verbou.

VVA-dienspunte (maatskaplikewerkkantore, voorskoolse sentrums en tehuise vir bejaardes) het in Maart 2023 weggespring om vir die projek voor te berei. Die dienspunte wat nie oor grondbeddings beskik nie,  gaan groente in buitebande plant. Die buitebande word oopgesny en uitgevoer met `n swartsak. Daarna word die buiteband met kompos gevul. Saailinge word in eierhouers gekweek totdat hulle gereed is vir groter houers of beddings.

Watter impak gaan die projek op gemeenskappe in die Vrystaat hê?

• Behoeftige gesinne kan selfversorgend word deur hulle eie groente te kweek en te plant en dit wat oorbly te verkoop of te deel met ander gesinne in nood.

• Leerders van VVA se voorskoolse sentrums word blootgestel aan die volgehoue versorging van groenteplantjies en die vreugde van die uiteindelike oes.

• Vir bejaardes hou die kweek van groente (in potte/houers) `n terapeutiese waarde in. Hulle kan weer die grond voel en ervaar, plantjies natgooi, nuttig voel en aan die eindproduk smul.

• Die kweek en plant van groente kan ook `n klein bedryf/besigheid  tot stand bring en as `n werkskeppingsprojek dien.

Drie werkswinkels gaan gedurende 2023 aangebied word, naamlik:

• `n Praktiese leerervaring – die kweek en plant van groente (April)
• Bemeester bemarkingstegnieke (Augustus)
• Die bestuur van `n klein besigheid (Oktober)

The population of South Africa, as well as the people of the Free State, are becoming impoverished on a daily basis due to the rising cost of living and the high unemployment rate in our country and province.

Poverty goes hand-in-hand with hunger, as people no longer have sufficient resources to buy food. This vicious cycle must be stopped.

FCIA’s provincial project – FCIA LIVES SUSTAINABLE IN 2023 – offers hope for those in crisis. FCIA will motivate and empower people throughout the Free State to grow and cultivate their own organic vegetables.

FCIA service points (social work offices, preschool centers and homes for the elderly) have started preparing for the project in March 2023. The service points that do not have beddings, will plant vegetables in tires. The tires are cut open and lined with black bags. Then the tire is filled with compost. Seedlings are grown in egg cartons until they are ready for larger containers or beds.

What impact will the project have on communities in the Free State?

• Needy families can become self-sufficient by growing and planting their own vegetables and selling or sharing what is left with other families in need.

• Learners at FCIA’s preschool centers are exposed to the sustained care of vegetable plants and the joy of the ultimate harvest.

• For the elderly, growing vegetables (in pots/containers) has therapeutic value. They can feel and experience the soil again, water plants, feel useful, and enjoy the end product.

• Growing and planting vegetables can also establish a small business/enterprise and serve as a job creation project.

Three workshops will be offered during 2023, namely:

• A practical learning experience – growing and planting vegetables (April)

• Mastering marketing techniques (August)

• Managing a small business (October)
